Glorious Mud?

Posted by The Editor at 25 Feb 07 22:06

It's that time of year - paw prints tracking through the house and droplets of muddy water misted across 'buttermilk' walls in the utility room and kitchen.  My washer and fridge are unrecognisable as 'white goods' and the all-permeating smell of steaming, wet dog greets any visitor brave enough to venture through the door (the car absolutely 'pen and inks').  I know the recent rain that has turned our local walks into mud baths means that the hose-pipe ban of the last year has to be off - hurrah, but I have had enough of washing down fur, picking gravel out of eight paws and towel drying my dogs twice a day.

The soil in this area has a high clay content and this sticks in-between their pads like dried-on Weetabix, glueing anything that it comes into contact with immediately to their feet. (Has anyone considered using Weetabix as an industrial strength adhesive?) By the time Barney and Betty have made it down our gravel drive they are two inches taller and 'tap' across the patio better than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.  I live less tha 20 yards from a public footpath leading to open countryside but in desperation I have taken to driving my dogs for a walk at a local dis-used airfield where they can trot along clean tarmac and frolic through long wet grass without becoming caked in glorious mud.  Any tips anyone on keeping the dirt levels and smell under control? (Suggestions for the dogs as well please!)

Muddy Paws

I, Like you, have found it to be extremely muddy recently and have taken to using the garage as a means of entering the house ( a bit like a submarines decompretion chamber ! ) Not everyone can do this and it made me think that there should be some kind of gadget on the market to wash dog's paws. I was thinking along the lines of something resembling a golf ball cleaning machine that could be battery opperated and could be positioned outside the front door. You can have the pattent for this idea ( my partner Jumbo Ratty thought of this ) Although check as it might have allready been invented. Here's looking forward to a long summer

Feet cleaner

I sometimes use a Hoselock pressure spray (you can buy them from DIY stores and they are usually used for spraying chemicals in gardens). You fill it with warm water, pump it up to get the pressure and hey presto you have a hand held, warm water spray that can blast off mud from dog fur. You can even take it in the car and hose the dogs down before they set foot in it.
Hope this helps someone and their muddy dogs.

given up!

I looked at the state of Digby and Lucy yesterday and just gave up! Left the mud to dry and brushed it off, there are washable throws on the furniture and I came home from work today and shampooed the carpet! Will probably be doing it all again next week, have just seen the weather forecast.

try the bath

I just stick Molly in the bath and shower her paws and underside - often 2x a day.

New Fashion Item

Especially for this time of year how about someone designing a black or dark fabric with faded muddy paw prints on it. Basically if my trousers were made of this type of material I'd be way in fashion.

John Colby at 02 Mar 2007 10:47

Spraying under pressure

If too much fluid pressure is applied then there's a chance of fluid getting under the skin (this applies to humans as well). Finer jets like the sprayer suggested can give quite an abrasive effect. Unpressurised showers are probably best.

John Colby at 02 Mar 2007 10:50

tried wipes

well here to spike smells and drags in the mud everywhere straight through the house and up the staries on a beidge carpet (why did i buy that colour) i did try the dog wipes but in all honesty they dont really help much well didnt help sike, so we just stick to the old fashioned dry him off with a towel , in hope we get the dirst off and smell.

Turtle Mat

Not sure if any of you have these already, but they have worked wonders in our house. Todd and Rosey are rather fond of mud and as winter has been so wet, we needed a mat. Our aunt recommended a turtle mat, and we looked on ebay and found several. We bought 2 off this man and they are WONDERFUL! They catch mud and water as soon as it touches it, and it has made such a difference!

lochmaddier at 02 Mar 2007 19:20

Cold water

Call me cruel but my dog gets covered in mud after a walk round our local park, so she gets washed down with the hosepipe outside!!!

Dog Juggler at 03 Mar 2007 15:52

washing up bowls

I am in the cruel category. Oscar (who gets muddy on the driest of days!) gets dunked in washing up bowls prepared before our walk and left outside the house.

muddy dogs

I am able to rinse my small dog under the outside tap!!! She hates it! My other dog just gives me a look that says ...don't even think about it!!! i try to keep both dogs confined to the kitchen until they are dry but more often that not they make for the sofa!!! Sand plus sea water plus two dogs equals a pongy house!!! Any suggestions will be welcome!!!!

Damage limitation

Remove carpets; washable paint on wall; dust sheets on furniture; plenty of old towels by the door; scented candles, aromatherapy, joss sticks for the doggie pong. Won't solve the problem, but, hey, wouldn't be without my babes!

DottieBengo at 07 Mar 2007 13:05

Here's What I Do....

I have a fair few big dogs coming and going each day at my place... Luckily I have a painted concrete floor so its dog-proof. When the parks are more like marshes the dogs come back three-quarters-coated in mud... they seem to love it as they always aim for the muddiest bits in the park! Emoticon: Smile when they get back they get towelled off so that when they shake I don't get mud flying onto walls and furnishings... then I just wait...keep my shoes on... and the mud dries, comes off onto the floor like sand and I use my Original California Floor Duster to sweep it all up...the dogs get a good brushing, the Duster does another turn and they're all clean until the next time. But yeah, roll on the summertime! I can't WAIT!!! Love Emily x

I'm not alone

Thank you for all your great comments. I will definitely be looking for a turtle mat on ebay - bet we'll be bidding against each other! One of the threads asked how you would change the design of dogs if you could start again and some bright spark said, "make them machine washable." Now there is an idea!

Don’t ever apply for a credit card without considering all the details. The best way to choose the right credit card is to make an apple-to-apple comparison. A great site that helps to do that is
