Lets With Pets: Calling all renters! Dogs Trust wants to hear your experiences

At Dogs Trust we hear many reasons for why people have to hand their dog in for rehoming. A common one is that the accommodation the owner is moving to is unsuitable for a pet.

If you've ever rented accommodation with a pet, we want to hear from you (it doesn't just have to have been a dog, either). Did you find it a doddle? Did you give up your furry, feathered or scaly pal to family, friends or an animal welfare organisation?

As part of the Lets With Pets campaign, Dogs Trust wants to hear about your experiences. Understanding the scope and scale of the problem informs our campaigning and might mean that more animals are able to live out their lives within happy families who do not want to give them up just because of a tenancy agreement.

Survey completed

I have completed the survey - i'm glad someone is giving this matter serious thought. I found it very hard to find anywhere when we needed a place to rent whilst our house purchase was going through. we had to move out of our house on a specific date and the new house hadn't completed, then fell through. My partner and i and our dog Wynter, had to stay on a camp site (dog friendly) which was a life saver because we ended up staying on the site for 4 months!! Yes - in a tent!! Great times, but it was the very last resort for us. :o) Jackie x

Luckily I have not been in this position but one of my friends is currently. She is now just two weeks from the date she has to move from her current rented accommodtion and still has not managed to find anywhere suitable for her family that will take her dog - just one JR not a pack of wolves or anything. Why is it so difficult?

Renting with pets

When i split with my ex, i had to move into rented accomodation. It was a nightmare trying to find somewhere that allowed pets. At the time i had my rottweiler, Trudi. Eventually i managed to get a 6 month lease on a property. Once the lease had expired, i faced the same nightmare again. I spent 9 months sleeping on the floors of friends and family and living out of a suitcase because i couldn't find anywhere.. I wasn't prepared to lose my dog or put her in kennels, and would've lived that way indefinately if i'd had to. Eventually I was lucky enough to find a long term leased property and i am still there 7 years later. My rottie is now waiting for me at rainbow bridge but i have a new dog now...queen annie the first!! Renting with animals is very difficult, but i don't believe it a sole reason to part with ur pet. Where there's a will there's usually a way. I wouldv'e slept in the car before rehoming my girl.

Renting with dogs

I think anyone prepared to rough it for a pet are definatly pet lovers ..& it seems a shame that it's so hard to rent some places with pets

Renting with pets

We had lived up to my split with my husband on a farm, with no neighbours for all of Tessas life..up till then tenyears of Tessas life, I eventually got a Housing Associatin Flat..not ideal with a pet, when we first moved she barked every time she heard a car on the road, then every time someone came near the building...blocks of flats 40 units in all, then go ballistic when my security buzzer went, now three years on, she only goes 'off' when my door bell goes...but it was long process, and I would not advocate having a dog in flat but the alternative would have been to get her put down. So we live 32 stairs up in a block of flats!..now as Tessa has been ill, she is carried up and down these at the moment....god knows what would have happened had she been a thirteen stone rottie!!!. But it is hard when your circumstances change so much it leaves you in fear of losing your animals through no real fault of your own.....it can be done but it is a long and sometimes painfull process. Life can suck but the reward in seeing your pets happy more than makes up for it!
