Learn With Dogs: Life as a Dogs Trust Education Officer

In a former life I trained as a primary school teacher and have infinite respect for them as a result! Dogs Trust's Natalie Dexter has gone from being a teacher to helping teachers and pupils learn about responsible dog ownership and safe handling of our four-footed companions.

Based at the Harefield (West London) Rehoming Centre, Natalie negotiates her way around London in her trademark yellow 'dogmobile', running workshops which encourage young people to explore the problems caused by irresponsible dog ownership. Her curriculum-friendly canine pal, Belle, is usually with her too, and school visits can also be made to the 'Education Barn' at the centre to find out how a shelter of this sort is run.

Extreme Fundraising: Dogs Trust Harefield Sponsored Skydive

The four-legged inhabitants of Dogs Trust's West London Rehoming Centre at Harefield keep all their feet firmly on the ground. The same can't be said for their two-legged carers.

In the words of Supporter Relations Office Charlotte Peters:

Sarah-Jane Honeywell visits Dogs Trust West London and explains rehoming

As dog lovers, we do anything we can to help dogs that need us. As a charity, we think it's important to show you what your donations, fundraising, sponsorship and support enable us to do. One way of doing that is to let you in with a little bit of video!

This video, shot at Dogs Trust West London (Harefield), takes you through the typical work going on in our centres, and is presented by the lovely Sarah-Jane Honeywell of CBeebies fame. She's a supporter of ours and we think she's great.

My inbox tells me it's time for another doggy news roundup! The nice sunny weather is still hanging on, and I think we'd all like to be outside playing with a pup. As long as we're stuck on the computer, however, we might as well indulge in a few doggy tales to keep us entertained.

- The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has started a dog registration scheme in order to be more efficient about return lost dogs to their owners. Keeping more than just your address on record to ensure that they can contact you, the council also provides a numbered tag for your dog. Good news, but our survey says: Microchip! [via K9]

Dog Control Orders: what are your experiences?

I'm being a speedy blogger today (all that time on Twitter must count for something after all!), as this afternoon I'll be getting a chance to visit one of our newest centres in Harefield, West London. As a relative newbie to Dogs Trust (one month yesterday!), it's a wonderful opportunity to see what we at HQ are supporting. On a daily basis, our dedicated volunteers across the country rescue, rehome, neuter, microchip and care for many dogs, with over 16,000 passing through our doors in the last year alone.

It would be wonderful to see this number decrease, of course. As with all charities, we seek the day we can put ourselves out of a job! Until then, though, it's heartening to know that we're expanding and able to deal with more and more of the estimated 100,000+ stray dogs in the UK and offer them an escape from the euthanasia policies of many organisations.

Dog toys, gifts and clothes - what appeals to you?

Having a trawl through the forum, I found this post on Dog Fashion. Personally, I'm not one for dressing up dogs unless it's to protect them from harsh weather, but some pups do seem to enjoy it - if they don't, they'll make their opinion known pretty quickly and it should be respected.

When I also saw this post from zoepup seeking a good home for a doggy England shirt, I couldn't resist getting onto the Internet and doing a bit of fantasy dog shopping: if I had any amount of money to spend on a dog what would I get for her (and me!)?
