Donor Dogs
Two interesting, and related pieces of mail came to our house today. One to tell my husband and I where the next blood collection would take place locally (as we are both blood donors) and an email from the rescue centre I adopted Betty from telling me about a scheme to start a blood donor register for dogs in the Essex/Herts. Area.
You would take your dog for a simple blood test to discover their type and this would be recorded on a database at the surgery. If your dog should ever need blood after a serious trauma, or during an operation, the vet would be able to check their database for dogs in the area that were a good blood-type match. They would then phone you and ask you to bring your dog in straight away to donate a unit for immediate use. This would give your dog a much better chance of survival and help them to make a speedy recovery.
It’s something I will be investigating and will definitely sign-up to. Ask your vet if they have any plans to start a local blood donor register where you live, it could save a dog’s life, and who knows, that dog could be yours.
Let me know what sort of response you get.
